Leland Stanford engaged Edward Muybridge to study motion of horses. Muybridge developed the “Zoopraxiscope” to show the motion of horses and other subjects. This motion picture consists of 24 photographs in a fast-motion series rendering a rider on the back of a horse galloping. The sequence starts slowly with a still image and magically begins to move and create the illusion of fluid movement.
