A woman grinds corn to a fine cornmeal on a grinding stone or metate. Her little girl copies her on a smaller stone. A group of girls sit with an older woman outside a Hopi Indian home in the village of Chipolavi, Arizona. The older woman works a piece of clay in her hands. She then adds rolled strips of clay to the worked piece of clay to form a clay jar. The girls observe the process. The older woman scrapes the jar with a wet stone until it is smooth. One girl leaves with the wet jar, and returns with it later when it is dry. The older woman polishes the jar, and then paints a design onto the jar.
