1950s dating advice for young boys new to the game. Young Woody’s path to a date is played out while a wise narrator guides and explains. The footage begins with an inter-title asking “How do you ask for a date?” The narrator offers “Well what about this” as the shot dissolves to a MCU shot of Woody’s profile facing camera right as he talks on the telephone. The clip continues with 3 versions of Woody asking Ann out as the footage each time cuts to MCU shot of Ann as she reacts. Of the three attempts the first is too nervous and does not work, the second is too casual and the last version in which Woody is calm and polite, offering a ticket Ann to come with him to the fair, is a success! Cuts to a MS of Woody rushing down the stair to get ready. The shot pans to the right following him briefly before cutting to a MS in the kitchen where Woody’s Mom and Dad. As Woody moves to sit at the table the camera pans right and down away from the previous framing which included Mom and Dad to a MS of Woody seated and opening cleaning fluid. Cuts to a MS of Woody cleaning his jacket from a different angle. Cuts to a MCU shot of Woody’s Mom as she explains the failings of her first date. The moral of the story is to always be on time for a date!
