In this clip, from a silent film telling the story of the Puritans, Governor Winthrop shows the Puritan Charter to Roger Williams, then a man comes in with a decree from England that says they must return the Charter to England.Clip opens on a CU of some writing about Indians and the land ownership of the Puritans. Governor Winthrop speaks to man, Roger Williams, who has written this. He shows Williams the Puritan Charter and there is a shot of it. Winthrop says that they must follow the charter. Winthrop’s wife takes the Charter and puts it back in a chest. A man comes in the room and informs Winthrop that a ship from England has returned. Another man comes in and delivers a decree. Winthrop reads it and a title card tells us that Ferdinando Gorges is coming to assume governorship and that the Puritan Charter must be returned to England.
