A recreation of a steamship agent's office in a European port at the turn of the century. Men, women, and children in traditional garb wait and speak with the agent. They are farmers and peasants from Eastern Europe and wish to travel to America. We see the man and woman toiling in the field. The woman wipes her forehead. They are back in the office. In another flashback, the agent stands as police officers search him and his desk. They look at his papers and take him away. Back in the office, a family chats. In their flashback, police remove their menorahs. They suffer from religious persecution and are thrown out of their home.
