In this early ‘90s clip, members of the Crips and Bloods, notorious rival gangs, meet at a destroyed Los Angeles shopping center at Western and Slauson Avenues and pledge to end gang violence and rebuild their communities. This meeting follows the riots that broke out in Los Angeles after four Los Angeles Police Officers accused of beating Rodney King were ultimately acquitted.

Clip begins showing the damaged shopping center. A wall and roof have severe burn marks. The rubble of a previously existing structure covers a lot.

Mostly young African-Americans stand in a crowd. One black man says that the Bloods and Crips will come together and guide the next generation in the right direction, essentially leading by example.

Another black man suggests that both gangs want to do good and need the support of the entire community, regardless of race, in order to do so. They just need a chance, he says.

A church with crosses and arch-covered stairways stands at a street corner.

Reverend E.B. Hill, a leader of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, attends the meeting and is one of many church leaders who agrees to support both groups, saying that he believes in them.

Also in attendance is a representative of Los Angeles’ key gang mediation agency, Community Youth Gang Services, which gave both groups its full support to work together and bring peace to the greater community.
