Here’s a 1970s clip showing the environment in and around XXX-rated venues in New York City but also, briefly, in Detroit and Atlanta.

Begins with a sign of the Wilcrest Hotel in Detroit, Michigan. In the distance are other business signs, including one for "All Girl Topless Shoe Shine," which appears to have been a “peep movie” venue.

Another sign is for the "Page Lounge." On the marquee, this is noted as "Atlanta’s largest topless go-go spot." On the building with the marquee, another sign reads "GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS."

A woman smiling and wearing red panties and a bra-like top shakes her hips. She appears to be standing in the doorway of a strip club.

Another woman, wearing a dress that's blowing in the wind and revealing her shapely legs, smiles as she leans against a poster that’s outside a strip club.

A man wears a bowler hat and carries a cane; he appears to be the guard or door man to a strip club. Down the street, there is traffic, both on the street and sidewalk.

A woman in a red dress enters a strip club. Inside, we see the silhouette of a female dancer. A man in the audience watches her dance.

Several men try to encourage passersby to enter their strip clubs.

A blond woman wearing silver heels and a g-string dances on a stage. She appears to have one man as an audience.

A silver-haired Asian man looks at a porn magazine in a porn shop. Naked people engaged in sex acts are visible on the covers of other porn magazines that are sitting on shelves against a wall.

Signs read “ADULT FILM BOOKS” and “The SCENE - ADULT FILMS RATED XXXX - PRIVATE VIEWING BOOTHS 25¢.”

The Astor Theater of NYC stands in decline. Its marquee is damaged and its doors and windows are boarded up.

We then see surveillance footage. A woman tries to grab a man’s hand, perhaps because he owes the woman money. In another shot, one man yanks the arm of a woman as a second man approaches the first, as if to say, “Hey, this woman belongs to me.”

A man drinks liquor in a shadowed doorway.

A sign reads, in part, ““Naked Came The Stranger”...A MUST SEE FOR PORNO FANS.” Arrows point screen left, telling us where the box office is. A Black woman who is wearing a red coat is seen working the box office. She tries to straighten out a wad of cash using her two hands.

Signs read “TOPLESS BAR,” “GOLDEN DOLLAR,” “Lovely HOSTESSES - Lotus Petal Whirlpool - Open 24 Hours - 7 Days A Week,” “Taj Mahal,” “NUDE...LIVE MODELS,” and “FRENCH QUARTERS.”

Other surveillance shots show women dressed up, looking at people on the street and walking up and down a sidewalk, as if searching for customers.

Several men are walking around on a sidewalk. They could be johns or they could be pimps or even both - or none at all. A pair of cops walk by.

A surveillance shot shows a man in a suit entering a door that reads, in part, “TOPLESS ENTERTAINMENT."

In a surveillance shot, a woman wearing a beret walks quickly down a sidewalk through a crowd of men standing around.

Two cops stand on the sidewalk, looking at people walking.

Men open the door to a porno magazine shop and begin walking in.

A woman hands out information to passing pedestrians.

Sign reads “CIRCUS TOPLESS,” accompanied by circus images like a clown and a tiger standing on a mound. Another sign is “The BOTTOMLESS PIT.”

An X-rated marquee flashes a red neon sign that reads “LOVE.” Another sign reads “8 EXPLICIT LIVE SEX ACTS plus STARLETS.”

A woman stands at attention, baring her legs and wearing red open-toe heels. She’s probably wearing just panties given that so much of her legs are showing.

Three men stand alone on a sidewalk; the camera focuses on them individually. They are dressed in warm-looking coats. They also look suspicious.

The clip’s final section shows NYPD vehicles traveling down a busy street at night. One cop is using a car phone. Several individuals are seen lingering on dark sidewalks, perhaps looking for a good time. The camera focuses on an NYPD vehicle’s single emergency overhead light.
