1950s
Clip from the '50s shows Muslims during Ramadan and making pilgrimages to Mecca.
Gunfire, says the narrator, marks the end of each day’s fast - presumably for Ramadan. The fasting, it is said, develops self-discipline and deepens one’s faith. People appear to be frying food in oil.
A group of people walk to and board a ship, on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Busses and trucks drive through a desert. The vehicles are packed with people. People also use camels and donkeys to get to Mecca. Hundreds, if not thousands, of tents cover a vast field. Mountains stand in the distance.
Men in white garments sit. One is reading, perhaps the Quran. Another uses a necklace or rosary of sorts, perhaps to assist with praying or chanting.
Throngs of Muslims surround the central shrine of Mecca, a large black cube of stone called Kaaba. This is where Abraham spoke with God, says the narrator. The Kaaba is a symbol of God’s plan to teach man to accept the divine way or path in life. Muslims show their reverence for God as they face the Kaaba.
Black birds, perhaps crows, fly over the Masjid al-Haram, the Sacred Mosque, which is located in Saudi Arabia.
