1962
Here’s clip 1 of 2 of a 1962 home movie showing people walking in fancy costumes at Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana. Large crowds are simply people-watching. A few highlights follow, mostly from the first minute of the film.
Begins with a person in a gorilla suit connected to a chain that’s being held by a pretty woman wearing a white top and skirt as well as red stockings.
Person walks around as a liquor bottle.
Joyous couple walks toward the camera with their faces painted red.
Man wearing a striped outfit walks toward the camera sporting oversized glasses. The woman next to him wears a polka dot dress.
Man wears a shirt that is covered with actual aluminum-like beer cans.
A kid rides a donkey while being guided by his dad.
Group of young women dressed as flapper girls walk toward the camera.
Girl with green skin, looking like an alien, walks with her mother
A couple is dressed as Pinocchio and Geppetto, waving to fans.
Five people wear red and white polka dot jumpsuits and conehead hats.
A person wears a large mask shaped like an olive-green human heart with black eyes and a mouth that looks like a hotdog. Hanging from the person’s neck and shoulders is a dry, seaweed-like grass. Red paint drips from the forehead of this large, scary-looking mask.
A dad and his son dress as red devils; both smile for the camera.
Aside from all the fancy costumes that are worn by pedestrians, lots of people are dressed “normally” and are watching the passersby. Some businesses in the shots include: Roosevelt Hotel, Walgreens, Lord’s, Seymour’s, the Canal Jewelry Company, and Graffs or Graff’s.
