Here’s a 1979 clip showing filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola at the Shang Yuen restaurant in San Francisco, speaking about his latest film, Apocalypse Now.

Clip begins with shots of a billboard for Apocalypse Now followed by movie poster of the film. The poster has a note that says, “Special Benefit Review, Northpoint Theater”; Northpoint Theater was located in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood at the corner of Bay and Powell Streets.

We then see a quick shot of the entrance to American Zoetrope, which at the time was Coppola’s film production company.

We next see the sign “Shang Yuen Restaurant,” where Coppola is having dinner with friends, family, and guests. Coppola sits at a large table with others, including his wife Eleanor, eating Chinese food. We get close-ups of some of the food. The lights from news stations, which are filming, seem particularly glaring in this otherwise minimally lit restaurant.

On a covered table in the restaurant are books by English author Joseph Conrad. Books include Chance, An Outcast of the Islands, Youth, The End of the Tether, and Lord Jim. Conrad’s novel, The Heart of Darkness, served as a basis for Coppola’s film Apocolypse Now. There is also a bronze-colored bust of Conrad sitting next to the books.

Coppola is asked to say a few words by an emcee. After walking up to the mic, Coppola apologizes for being late. Coppola says that the film was just released in several places and that he’ll be going to Europe see the film, both in Stockholm and Paris.
