In this clip, from a silent film telling the story of the Puritans, a family of pilgrims is introduced, who have just lost their daughter to fever. Governor Winthrop is also established as the leader of the Puritans in Charlestown.Clip opens with some title cards about the Puritans and their journey to New England. Next, there is some text written in old script; it looks like a declaration of some type. Another title card describes the initial difficulties of the Puritans. A woman, man, and child, all in pilgrim dress, are seated and looking at something. Cut to a grave marker in the man’s hand, showing that a young girl has died. Cut back to the family, the man moves some leaves on the ground. In WS a drummer beats the drum at his hip. A title card indicates that the action in the following shots is to take place at Governor Winthrop’s Great House in Charlestown. In LS, people gather outside a house; CU on drummer drumming. The man from the family before lifts his wife so she can stand; they talk about the fever, and resolve to go to hear Governor Winthrop preach.
