In this clip, from a silent film telling the story of the Puritans, a court demands that the Puritan Charter be returned after some scheming by Thomas Morton, then the clip shows some troubles with the Charter in Boston. In LS, Thomas Morton preaches to some Indians from a Bible. He is then captured by some neighboring pilgrims. In MS he tells the end of this story, which the viewer knows is a fabrication (he traded with Indians and gave them guns, he did not spread Puritan teachings) used so that he will not be punished in England. The other pilgrims who captured him look angry. The head of the court demands that the Puritan Charter be returned, but it is back in America with Governor Winthrop. Thomas Morton smiles, and walks up to Ferdinando Gorges to tell him that he will soon be governor of New England. Back in New England, this time in Boston, a man paces a room. Roger Williams of Salem believes that the Puritan Charter is unlawful because it ignores the land rights of the Indians. He speaks in MS, seated at a table in the same room as the pacing man. Margaret Winthrop sews, then goes up to her husband. She retrieves something from a chest as Governor Winthrop and Roger Williams talk.
