The conductor (Michael Tilson Thomas) is teaching his musician's an alternative way to think about music. The conductor is explaining how he wants them to sound by showing hand movement and describing the feeling. The scene cuts to a CU of the conductor's hands going through sheets of music. The scene shows a flute, trombone, and a cello. Not only are they reading the sheet music but they are choosing sounds of their own to suit the conductors signal.
